The Sierra Leone Marathon route takes in some of the most beautiful scenery in Northern Sierra Leone. Winding through tropical forest and local villages, this unique race is one you'll never forget. Whether you choose to walk, jog or run you'll be welcomed by local people and high-fived by children along the route. The race has an electric atmosphere that carries you towards the finish line as you battle 30-degree heat and 90 per cent humidity. What's more, marathon day is for everyone; we offer distances for all levels from 5km to the full 42km marathon and volunteering roles on the day!
THE FULL 42KM MARATHON:
This is not your average marathon; it's about much more than just endurance. Arrive at Makeni's famous Wusum Hill stadium for sunrise and line up alongside local and international runners. Whether it's your first marathon or your fiftieth, the buzz of the start line won't fail to
gear you up for the run ahead. Head out through Makeni as local traders begin setting up for the day ahead. Follow bumpy terracotta-coloured tracks out of the town towards the jungle-lined highway. As the sun climbs, enjoy sweeping views of Sierra Leone's countryside with spectators cheering you as you run past. At the halfway point, begin weaving your way back to Makeni and enjoy the company of local children who run with you as you past through their villages. On the final stretch, make your way through crowd-lined streets towards the stadium where the finish line, a cold Star beer and a hand-carved medal are waiting for you.
THE 21KM HALF MARATHON
As the sun rises, join local and international runners for a warm-up at the Wusum Hill Stadium before heading out into Makeni's streets alongside runners tackling the full marathon. Pass through the buzzing town where crowds will cheer you on as you make your way out onto the highway. Say goodbye to the full marathon runners as you begin your return to Makeni, winding through lush green landscapes and animated rural villages. As you pass under the shadow of Wusum Hill, high-fives and cheering from local children will carry you through to the finish line.
Enjoy the electric atmosphere of the Wusum Hill Stadium as the full and half marathon runners set out on the course. Join hundreds of
local and international runners at the start line for sunrise, including inspiring and humbling local amputees, victims of the
devastating civil war. Head out together into the hustle and bustle of the town, high-five children and soak up the atmosphere as all of Makeni turns up for the running event of the year, cheering you towards the finish line. Pass local bars, butchers and marketstalls as you run through muddy, terracotta-coloured streets. Cross the finishing line to whooping and whistling from the crowd, and enjoy the moment you're awarded your unique hand-carved medal.
Start your marathon day experience by cheering your fellow runners as they set off on the full and half marathons. Warm up alongside local runners before taking your place at the start line. Run through the Makeni marketplace which by now is in full swing. Pass by vibrant market stalls selling everything from traditional lappa fabric to homemade palm wine. The 10km stays within the hustle and bustle of the town where the spirit of the marathon spurs you on. See the impact of your fundraising as you run past local schools and family businesses supported by Street Child. As the stadium comes into view, you'll be greeted by roars and applause. Cross the finish line and collect your unique medal. Enjoy the buzz of the stadium and watch as other runners complete the challenge of a lifetime.
Head out early on the course before the runners and help to set up a water station on the route. Turn it into your very own cheer station and get ready to lose your voice shouting words of encouragement to our incredible marathon runners as you hand out vital water. You'll be part of the amazing team who make the marathon run smoothly on the day!
